Unless you're Gwen Stefani, red lipstick should be used only as a power play. It makes too big of a statement.
I used to wear lipstick every single day. This was back in my messy-ponytail-sorority-tee-with-yoga-pants college days. (If I'm honest, this is still my weekend look. Only replace the sorority tee with some sort of skateboard logo that was sent to my husband and pawned off on me.) In the decade since, lipstick culture has changed. Matching or nude liner has fallen out of fashion for daily wear. These days the daily lip look is more subtle, usually somewhat glossy, and always easy. Er, lazy.
Because they're my favorite guinea pigs, I asked my book club girls to bring their favorite everyday lip color to our meeting last week. If you're in a lip rut, examine their choices and let inspiration hit. Befores on the left, Afters on the right.

P. doesn't wear ever wear makeup. It's safe to say she humors me during my beauty experiments. I put her in Kiehl's Lip Gloss in Pink Rider. And doesn't she look pretty?
This is what I look like at book club. Wait, was I saying something earlier in the post about messy ponytails and t-shirts? My go-to lip color is Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Sex Machine.
Rachel - who we've established does not take a bad picture - ties her hair up in the knot without a rubber band or anything. Just hair tying hair. Isn't that great? I wish I could do that. Rachel is also wearing Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil, but her shade is Walkyrie.
