Welcome to Mommy Mondays, the one day of the week when I explore parenting issues. I never lack for content.
First I saw a high profile person on twitter ask if we all agreed that time outs were damaging to a child's self-esteem and that instead we, as parents to our children, should "talk it out."
I dismissed it. Obviously.
Then I saw other people tweeting back at her. Agreeing.
Then my head exploded. Obviously.
Apparently the argument here is that sending child to Time Out, alone, hurts the child's feelings. The being alone part.
So Time Out is now considered too harsh? I thought Time Out was the soft approach after we all decided spanking was child abuse?
And I thought that a child should be alone sometimes, because that fosters independence and creativity? But now they can't get in trouble, they can only be talked to, and they can't be alone for any length of time because that's scary?
I can't keep up.
