The Gorilla directed the opening sequence for the Kids Choice Awards over the weekend.
It was, easily, the best awards show I've ever attended. Who knew?!
It's full of kids, obviously, and nothing about them is Too Cool for School. The crowd was screaming and clapping and dancing and so excited for the entire hour and a half. What a blast!
I thought it was so creative how they announced the winners in non-traditional ways (above, by big photos in the audience, or on a flying blimp) and how great that the winner get about ten seconds to say thank you and get off the stage. There was not a single shout out to an agent or mom or God or anything. Just "thank you!" sweet wave, and goodbye. A time-saver, and a relief for the audience.
We happened to sit right in front of the video prompter. And then Katy Perry ascended above me.
Michelle Obama spoke, honoring Taylor Swift, and then I tried not to get hit by oversized flying balls.
I only found out last minute that I was going to get to go, so I just had to throw together an outfit. It was rainy and breezy in LA, so I took advantage of the last little bit of winter weather and threw on my faux fur vest over a sequined Marc Jacobs sweater and black skinny jeans. I haven't wanted to invest in clothes lately since my post-baby body is still evolving, so instead I used the event as an excuse to pick up these Michael Kors Rock n' Roll boots with gold studs.
My man of the hour did such a good job shooting Will Smith in a blimp, that Fox News claimed the entire sequence was digitally animated. I'm here to tell you personally that not one shot of those first few minutes were digitally animated. Real blimp, real skyscrapers, real parachuter.
We've decided to take it as a compliment that people think it looked fake.
It was a great night, and I hope we get to go again next year. I left relieved and yet disappointed that I didn't get slimed. Mostly relieved.
