The thing about spending the first week of January on vacation is that everyone else moves on into the New Year and you live in a family bubble time warp. People are back to work, back to school, breaking their resolutions, sending urgent emails, and we're just drifting down the mountain and sipping our hot cocoa.
You'll never hear me complain about our extended holiday break. This week in the snow has become a tradition, and I've learned that it is possible to have meaningful conversations while wearing goggles and gloves.
We've had long lingering meals and watched movies and football games. We rent the same house every year, which makes the memories blend together in a happy way.
As much as I appreciate the time away myself, what is really special is watching all the cousins play together, ski together, eat together, sing together.
We're traveling home today, so tomorrow we'll be jumping head first into the new year.
And, oh, how I have hopes for this year.
