A year ago this week we shot the Animal Planet show Tanked in our home as the ATM guys installed a massive 1,200 gallon saltwater fish tank in our man room. It is The Gorilla's obsession. I decided to ask him how he felt about it one year later.
HH: I want to interview about the fish tank.
Gorilla: Right now? I’m not prepared.
HH: How would you prepare?
One year. Ginormous fish tank. Thoughts?
I love it.
It’s the greatest purchase ever.
So can we agree that it’s been a very costly part of our life?
What’s your favorite fish right now?
The broomtail wrasse from the Red Sea.
How many losses do you think we’ve had so far?
I don’t know why you want to get into that. But it is sad when you lose a fish you like. A rule with a fish tank is that you don’t name them. If you name them, it’s the kiss of death.
I always get mad at you for coming down there and naming those stupid things.
But we call them by their names. Like Maxine, Gramps (RIP), Toby (RIP), and Paul Mccartney (who now has tumors on his face.)
I tried to name that pansy eel but I keep forgetting what we named it. That’s probably why he’s still alive.
Anything you would do differently?
Yes. I would have started right away with the quarantine tank. That’s the smartest thing you can do with a tank like that.
(Ed. note: the quarantine tank is where we hold new fish until we know they're healthy and struggling fish to separate them from others in the tank.)
How long have we had the quarantine tank?
'Bout 6 months now.
Do you have people say anything about the show Tanked?
When it aired I was traveling a lot and people would come up to me and say they’d seen it. Unfortunately when the episode aired, the water was so cloudy. I don’t like seeing it on tv. It’s so much more awesome in real life.
When people come to the house is it the first thing you show them?
Has anyone come to the house for the express reason of seeing it?
Friends, yes. Not strangers off the street.
Jackson, the little boy from the movie I’ve been shooting. The funny thing about that was that his whole thing in life is fishing. He watches Animal Planet and Nat Geo. He favored (Johnny) Knoxville over me 100% until the Tanked episode aired and then the table turned.
But it aired like 6 months into shooting.
Yeah. He wouldn’t hit me in the nuts after that.
Well that’s good to know.
Who else came? Your agent came to our house for the first time in 10 years. I don’t think that was a coincidence.
No, probably not.
Do you sometimes play hooky from work to meet Nic (the person who takes care of the tank) at the house?
My favorite thing to do is go get new fish where I have to put on his company t-shirt and pretend I work for the fish company to be allowed into the big fish warehouse that’s not open to the public.
Do you think anyone there is buying that you work for a fish company?
I got recognized by an employee there. But he kept it on the DL.
It really is one of my favorite things to do in the world to go there. I put on my fishy boxers for good luck.
Can we clarify that you mean fish-printed boxers?
How many fish are in there total right now?
How many are we shooting for?
30-ish. We’re at the point where we’re just adding really specific fish. Earlier I was more general with what I chose to put in there. Now I'm much more specific. Unfortunately this means they’re pricier.
I’ve learned a ton about fish, their compatibility, who eats what and when.
We’re in it for the long haul, then?
Definitely. My enthusiasm hasn’t tapered one bit since we got it.
What’s YOUR favorite current fish?
Maxine has always been my favorite. What kind of fish is she?
A clown trigger fish. She’s kind of a dick.
You mean she’s the queen of the tank. That’s why I like her. Also, she's a survivor.
There’s one fish now that's more bossy: the Sohal Tang.
Which one’s that?
Gray and black stripes with orange pectoral fins and electric blue line around her edge.
She’s big time boring.
I tend to like red sea fish better than other fishes.
What does that even mean?
That they come from the red sea.
*he rattles off a list of fish that I can’t begin to keep up with to explain his red sea fish devotion*
You were recently on the Tanked special about celebrities. Do you consider yourself a celebrity?
Nah, I was on it because of the guests we had in our house when we shot.
That’s very humble of you.
I'm pretty fucking famous.
This is going to be a really good post. Mostly because I’m really funny in it.
Do you want to take a picture of the quarantine tank? Because there’s two really good fish in it right now.
