I have piles of stuff in a spare room that I’ve been meaning to donate or “send to someone who needs it” for months now. I’m an avid declutter-er, my spring cleaning phase goes on all year. (Though somehow, my house manages to look like it needs a good once-over all the time. Riddle me that.)
So when I learned about the Garage Sales for Orphans that Help One Now has created, I jumped on board. I’m still reeling from my time in Haiti, and even though we’ve sponsored a child and I’ve been sharing this story everywhere, it feels helpless to live in LaLa Los Angeles and lament the world’s injustice.
So raising some money for a good cause while doing something we all need to do anyway (clean out our closets!) seems like a good way to channel this energy.
If you’d like to host your own Garage Sale for Orphans this spring or summer, click here to sign up and receive tips and resources from Help One Now (make sure to support the Ferrier Village project). If you’re in the general Los Angeles area, I’d love to see you at my sale in a few weeks!
The Hollywood Housewife Garage Sale for Orphans will be on Saturday, May 17 from 9am - 12pm in a parking lot at 900 West Alameda in Burbank. The proceeds will go directly to the Ferrier Village, where they're actively rescuing children from human trafficking at the border.
If you’d like to help me with the Hollywood Housewife Garage Sale, here are a few ways:
Donate your gently-used items! Things that are popular at garage sales: children’s toys & clothes, home decor items, books, anything you think could get a few bucks. I’ll be collecting your donations all day on Friday, May 16 at the sale location at 900 West Alameda in Burbank.
If you plan to drop off things, please email me to let me know so I can get a gauge on how much we will have, how many tables we need, etc. Our sale will be in the parking lot of an office building.
Volunteer your time or talent! I’ll need help on Friday, May 16 tagging and setting up and on May 17 while running the actual sale. If you could volunteer just a few hours of your time, it would really help me out. We need people to sort, organize, and make signs in preparation for the sale, and others to tidy, answer questions, and run the register on the day of the sale. If this is you, please email me: housewife(at)hollywoodhousewife(dot)com. Or if you have a special talent you’d like to offer (maybe a photographer so we can document this thing? Or baked good to sell?), let me know.
Spread the word and shop! If you’re in the area or have friends that are, please feel free to spread this flyer around on facebook or twitter. Then come shop! More than anything, we need people to shop the garage sale in order to raise money for Help One Now.
I am excited about this project for all sorts of reasons. I love a fun event, I need less stuff in my life, and most importantly: we’re helping to grow and sustain Ferrier Village, the orphan rescue I visited in Haiti.
Come donate your stuff or your time, and also come shop and say hi on May 17.
See you there!
