We are home after our time at the lake. All told, we were there 8 weeks, hosting 41 overnight houseguests over a total of 24 nights, and that doesn’t count dozens of friends and family who came in and out the slamming screen door for meals or coffee or s’mores or to borrow a ski rope.
We are full out our pores of memories and calories. Exhaustedly happy, and craving some routine. So we’ve spent the last week settling back into Los Angeles, where the social rules are strange, but the food is healthier, and where we comfortably call ourselves “home.”
This was the best summer we’ve had in a long time. Each year gets easier with the kids, more fun and less fearful. We’re all sleeping a little more, we try to remember vitamins and hydration, and outdoor play trumps a screen every time. Sometimes an extra tube ride replaced a bath, most dinners were within view of the sunset over our dock, and the best lunches were those served up fried from the boatside gas station.
